Strong critical reactions are often thought to be signifiers of meaningful art. Well, try this one on for size: Mac Wellman's Sincerity Forever was officially denounced by a US congressman and disowned by the National Endowment for the Arts before garnering two Obies and oodles of praise from theatre critics. The play takes place in a small town populated by white supremacist teenagers and Mystic Furballs — picture the offspring of an alien and chicken mating. But things really heat up when a black woman named Jesus H. Christ (played as a cross between Hamlet and the Savior herself) shows up. Hardly just a zany exercise in entropy, the play hits hard at timely issues, such as free speech, racism, and homophobia.
