Raphael Saadiq described his 2002 debut, Instant Vintage, as "gospeldelic" — a funky hybrid of spiritualism, turntablism, and deeply groovy funk. With last year's The Way I See It, the Toni! Tony! Toné! and Lucy Pearl bass player and soul renaissance man breathed yet more new life into a refreshed R&B realm; one of 2008's best releases, the finger-snapping, toe-tapping, head-bobbing collection is immediately ingratiating and brilliantly executed. Tonight, the Oakland native returns to his hometown to take the Fox Theater's gorgeous stage.
