She Stoops to Comedy

A Rubik's cube of shifting love allegiances and convoluted gender bending, David Greenspan's She Stoops to Comedy is a breezy, mischievous romp through the interplay between on and off-stage love. The play follows a vain actress' attempts to rekindle a romance with her former lover by taking the stage opposite him in a production of Shakespeare's As You Like It. Greenspan's twist? The actress is played by a man and her ex by a woman; and to knot things further, in the already gender-troubled play-within-a-play, the actor-playing-actress is actually vamping as a male actor. Sandwich that mind-melt with zippy wordplay and existential role-playing and you have a contemporary comedy of errors worthy of the Bard himself.
