Mariza's voice soars, dives, and re-emerges, often times in a single measure. Far from mere vocal histrionics, the undisputed "Queen of Fado" is simply engaging in Portugal's national song of love and loss. Mariza's swells and vibrato mirror the heart's fullness and its fluttering doubts; her rang encompassing both its capacity for cavernous sorrow and ecstatic joy. And while her singing springs from the traditional fado form, Mariza is unafraid to add flourishes from Brazilian, Argentinian, and Cape Verdean folk traditions.
