On the morning of November 20, 1969, 79 American Indians, including young couples and children, landed on Alcatraz, giving the US government the ultimatum to, "use violence upon us as before to remove us from our Great Spirit's land, or to institute a real change in its dealing with the American Indian." This Is Indian Land remembers this watershed moment in both local and Native American history. Starting out with shorts by Ohlone filmmakers, and never-before-seen slides of the occupation-printed Alcatraz Newsletter, tonight's program also features director James Fortier introducing his inspirational documentary Alcatraz Is Not an Island, that includes major appearances by occupation leaders John Trudell and Richard Oakes. In addition to readings by poets Ben Wood, Chris Kennedy, and Jesse Drew, rare period posters will also be on display.
