Otto Preminger: Anatomy of a Movie
-
- Laura
Director Otto Preminger was a Jewish refugee of Austrian origin whose unflinching independence led to innovations in both storytelling and social awareness — often at the expense of MPAA regulations. His provocations include the first depiction of a gay bar, in Advise and Consent (1962); Dorothy Dandridge's history-making, Oscar-nominated performance in Carmen Jones (1954); and portraits of social taboos like rape and addiction. PFA's retrospective features 15 Preminger classics, including the quintessential detective noir Laura (1944), Jean Seberg as a seductive young warrior in Saint Joan (1957), and the gothic mystery Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965).
