A landmark of Taiwanese cinema, Hou Hsiao-hsien's A City of Sadness was inaccessible for many years. Thankully (and nicely timed, too, for SF Film Society's Taiwan Film Days series) YBCA has located a new 35mm print which restores Hou's masterpiece to its original glory. The film follows the lives of the Lin family during the tumultuous period between the Japanese withdrawal from Taiwan (after 51 years of occupation) in 1945, to the Taiwan's secession from mainland China four years later. Gorgeous to look at and equally wonderful to decipher, A City of Sadness stays focused on the dramas of the heart even as it speaks of a nation's re-birth.
