While all roads in the contemporary cultural zeitgeist may seem to lead to John Cage, minimalist composer Terry Riley — himself inspired by Cage — is also tremendously influential, albeit less widely known. Tonight, Riley returns to his alma mater after 35 years for a rare solo piano performance. Although not quite the same as the all-night concerts that Riley pioneered in the late '60s, Pipe Dreams aims to fill the Berkeley Art Museum's vaulting interior with expansive sound for hours on end. Keeping their galleries open until midnight, BAM encourages guests to bring cushions, blankets, and sleeping bags to get cozy on the floors while basking in the reverberations of Riley's singular style.
