In an ironic twist, SF expat Toban Nichols only started showing here after he moved to LA, despite recognition in just about every other corner of the art world. Now the City by the Bay is giving Nichols love in spades, and Oppobrium, at Adobe Books' Backroom Gallery, is just one of three recent local exhibitions. His manipulation of Vogue's Book of Etiquette and Good Manners from 1969 exemplifies Nichols' interest in the dregs of popular culture and their insidious effect on our day-to-day life. If such prescriptive texts as Vouge aim to erase all bodily difference, Nichols gleefully reverses these constricting effects by interrupting their flow and reinstating the physical in all its vulgar glory.
