Somewhere between madman and uncanny visionary, cartoonist Andy Ristiano creates comics as exhilarating for their bold flourishes of color as for their mind-bending plots. His latest project, Escape from Dullsville — slated to hit shelves early next year — follows the adventures of a claustrophobic fetus that makes a daring getaway from the womb. Originally appearing in Ristiano's first full-length graphic novel, Life of a Fetus, the titular character brushes up against cultists, aliens, heat-packing babysitters, and mad-scientist puppets in a loopy road trip across the United States. The Cartoon Art Museum's mini-retrospective offers a broad look at the local artist's evolution, tracing his progress from high-school comic strips to Escape from Dullsville.
