Italian-born pianist and conductor Marino Formenti has established himself as one of the most interesting and visionary performers of our time, both by virtue of his interpretations of modern and contemporary music and through his creative, daring programming. This December, take some time out for two ecstatic, monumental meditations of the spirit — concerts in sacred spaces entitled Aspects of the Divine. On December 5 at St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, Formenti will perform Messiaen’s profound work Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jesus in a program he’s entitled “Twenty Glances.” Then on Friday, December 11 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in San Francisco, Formenti performs "Seven Last Words: Works by Haydn and Bernhard Lang." This program consists of Haydn’s landmark work, The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross paired with contemporary composer Lang’s response to that piece, Monadologie V – 7 Last Words of Hasan.
