Throughout The 39 Steps, Patrick Barlow's quick-witted adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's classic spy movie (originally a 1915 novel by John Buchan), there are sly references to Hitchcock's cinematic oeuvre and tongue-in-cheek noir allusions galore. That would be enough to get a chuckle out of clued-in audiences, but the highly acclaimed London-via-Broadway import has more tricks up its sleeve. Maria Aitken's direction walks a fine line between spoof and silliness, and the fine cast of four takes on dozens of roles with comical speed. But the most impressive feat comes courtesy of set and costume designer Peter McKintosh and lighting designer Kevin Adams, who magically transform the Curran into an ebullient, old-fashioned theatrical experience
