SFMOMA's biennial award for local talent — bestowed by the Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art (SECA) — always highlights some of the Bay Area's most talented artists, but this year's recipients shine especially bright. Trevor Paglen photographs what we can't see (and what the government doesn't want us to see) with the naked eye, rendering covert military operations as intensely hued nighttime panoramas. Tauba Auerbach denatures fonts and text into abstract Op Art explosions; Jordan Kantor's oil paintings add a new voice to the old debate around appropriation in modern art; and multimedia artist Desirée Holman's videos and photographs use homemade masks and costumes to explore imaginary, familial, and cultural bonds as mediated by pop culture.
