Edward Albee is a keen observer of the human condition, and A Delicate Balance is an ideal showcase for his dissection of the so-called American Dream. The story centers on a self-possessed couple whose picket-fence life falls to pieces, with the help of their closest friends and family. Albee's trademark sharp wit and scathing dialogue bring equal parts drama and realism to the play, and though he offers little insight into achieving happiness, his theatrical virtuosity makes for a sensational ride.
