Antony Hegarty's heart-wrenching warble turns soothing strings and minor-key acoustic melodies on their otherwise unassuming core; it's the sound of the beast moaning and eternal pain without prejudice. And while some may mistake his new record's unusually reserved tone for diluted emotion, the lack of outright theatricality on The Crying Light is in some ways more true to Antony's hyper-sensitive ethos. Minus the razzle-dazzle of intentionally overwrought vocals and instrumentals, Antony is able to truly bare distressed emotion, rather than simply perform it. Of course, tonight he'll do both.
