Deerhunter's fascination with '50s and '60s pop is palpable, but their more accessible tones are often tempered by the reverb-heavy, post-punk drones of acid-dripping rock 'n roll. With last year's Microcastle, Bradford Cox and co. took yet another step away from the pop and Joey Ramone-style freakery that defined their very early days, reaching deep into the psychedelic stratosphere. They also spread the wealth — guitarist Lockett Pundt takes lead vocal responsibilities on "Agoraphobia," and bassist Josh Fauver wrote most of standout "Nothing Ever Happened." Hopefully they'll be just as equitable this evening as they kick off the Noise Pop fest.
