As suggested by the colliding adjectives in its title, Dan Wolf and Tommy Shepherd's theatrical adaptation of Adam Mansbach's novel of the same name doesn't play nice with race. Uncomfortable with his Jewish heritage, protagonist Macon Detornay finds refuge in hip-hop culture, to comic and grave effects. As an MC with local hip-hop crew Felonious, Wolf lets his musical background shine through; his deft and authentic touch is evident in the production's dance numbers, beatboxing, and freestyling — additions that bring Detornay's complex character to life.
