With its commitment to rebellious, controversial, and often unrepentantly queer work, Strand Releasing may very well be the Grove Press of film distribution. In honor of the company's 20th anniversary, YBCA is mounting a retrospective of its impressive catalogue, starting with its most recent acquisition, last year's Downloading Nancy — the Sundance shocker about a troubled housewife who chooses to commit suicide by submitting herself to physical torture. Other features include John Maybury's nightmarish portrait of British painter Francis Bacon, Love Is the Devil; Jacques Nolot's diaristic sketches of elderly gay life; and Gaspar Noé's journey into the mind of a sociopath, I Stand Alone.
