As a guitarist for bizarro rock acts Mr. Bungle and Faith No More, Trey Spruance toed the line between heavy funk and death metal, pushing his comrades ever deeper into the experimentalist ether. With Secret Chiefs 3, he incorporates a similarly wide mish-mash of outsider sounds, plumbing the depths of everything from Arabic instrumentals and Irish jigs to surf rock and mischievous, Bungle-esque funk metal. Tonight, he helps avant-garde composer John Zorn kick off a six-day Yoshi's residency, leading his expanded ensemble through excerpts from the songbook of the Masada orchestra.
