In addition to playing in three of Denver's finest bands — Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Tarantella, and Munly — Renaissance man Daniel Grandbois is also an author whose comical and fantastic fiction, in the words of one critic, "falls somewhere between Brautigan and Basho." Tonight, City Lights celebrates the release of two new books by Grandbois: The Hermaphrodite (An Hallucinated Memoir), a pocket miscellany illustrated by Alfredo Benavidez Bedoya's surreal woodcuts, and Unlucky Lucky Days, a collection of 73 short tales in the vein of Yasunari Kawabata's Palm-of-the-Hand stories. In addition to reading from the latter, Grandbois is joined by two of his bandmates to perform arrangements for violin, accordion, and the nyckelharpa, an ancient Swedish instrument. An exhibit of Bedoya's original art adds the final touch to this multimedia event.
