Even though SF artist Jonathan Runcio has likened his vibrantly hued, three-dimensional works to "crumpled paintings," his exhibition at Ratio 3 gallery thankfully lacks the insouciance implied by that description. But that's not to say Runcio's claim is insincere — indeed, his jarring, acid-neon screenprints on acrylic, as well as the subtle colors brought about through overlapping and juxtaposition, are "painted" in the most contemporary sense of the word. Similarly, the "crumpling" in his work isn't so much the effluent of a gesture of disregard; more accurately, it's a conceptual rupture of several generations of late 20th-century Pop-art tropes, forming a dialog that's as daring for its innovation as it is wicked for its restraint.
