New York-based Argentine painter Fabian Marcaccio frequently fuses classical techniques with nontraditional materials to create his super-saturated, often dystopic visions. Recently, Marcaccio has displayed what he calls "draftants" — hybrids of "drawing" and "mutants" — which combine marked-up and carved synthetic panels with multimedia elements, such as video monitors and strobe lights. Brutal and colorless, the "draftants" stand out as digital-age descendants of Goya's Disasters of War, serving as a politically pointed extension of the artist's "paintants" — abstract canvases which often hemorrhage color and form beyond the confines of the frame. Tonight, Marcaccio discusses the art-historical thinking behind his unusual and arresting practice.
