The cinema of British filmmaker Isaac Julien lives in the margins. This isn't to say that Julien's work has gone unrecognized; far from it, his CV presents a laundry list of prestigious awards and associations with venerable institutions. Rather, Julien's work — ranging from feature-length films and documentaries to art installations and photography — has long focused on the politics, perils, and pleasures of how marginal subjects are represented. Whether exploring the "creole-ized" intersections of race, sexuality, and place in the poetry of Langston Hughes; modern-day St. Lucia; Britain's legacy of slavery; or the life and art of his contemporary Derek Jarman, Julien exposes the gnarled entanglements of the personal and the political that define our world.
