One of the world's foremost fashion photographers, Cathleen Naundorf often looks to the medium's golden age for inspiration. Typically shooting in black and white, Naundorf teases out contemporary haute couture's connections to seasons and decades past, while her dramatic use of shadow and posing frequently evokes the work of studio legends such as Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn, and Richard Avedon. The effect, however, is never studied or slavishly mimetic. Although, to some extent, nothing is ever new in fashion, Naundorf understands that (to paraphrase Coco Chanel) style remains — it is this enduring core of beauty that her work so expertly telegraphs.
