Desirée Holman: Reborn
-
- Desirée Holman, Still from Reborn, 2009, Courtesy of Silverman Gallery
Desirée Holman knows a thing or two about the power of make-believe. The recent SECA Award recipient often utilizes handmade costumes, masks, and props in her multimedia pieces, to explore larger cultural fantasies around gender, race, and mass-mediated existence. Taking its name from the popular brand of lifelike, artisanal baby dolls, Reborn ventures into the darker reaches of the maternal instinct. The exhibit's drawings and single-channel video are the culmination of months of careful research into the craft and subculture of nonliving dolls and the women who love them.
