Big Art Group specializes in manufacturing performance-art pieces that masquerade as grenades. Its newest proto-anarchist concoction, S.O.S., plays at first glance like a needle dancing willy-nilly across a late Miles Davis record: a group of actors dressed in oversized animal costumes huddles together amid a shimmering matrix of data-streaming screens, and discusses, with sincere gravity, the shrinking odds of survival in a rapidly changing world. Meanwhile, techno fiends fruitlessly seek to kick their addictions, and a rag-tag group of rhetorically challenged revolutionaries fights fate with predictable results. As jagged as the willed combination of these shards may sound, the result is not only visually sublime (in the original terror-plus-awe sense), but also a surprisingly compelling and accessible narrative.
