Exercises in both research and recreation, the films of Jean Rouch aimed to document, as his sociologist colleague Edgar Morin wrote, "both reality and the problematic nature of reality-via-camera." An anthropologist at heart, Rouch's fly-on-the-wall camera captured both direct (and directed) discoveries, whether looking at Africa and its people or the mod mademoiselles and lonely, short-sleeved men of the Left Bank. Rouch and Morin's Chronicle of a Summer takes the temperature of Paris, 1960 by repeatedly asking its impromptu subjects the provocatively simple question, "Are you happy?"
