Acting group Campo Santo cook up an extremely playful take on Junot Diaz's Pulitzer-prize winning The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao in Fukú Americanus. The story of Oscar, an overweight sci-fi nerd and a hopeless romantic in the truest sense, unravels against the enlarged backdrop of the Dominican flag — whose shadow (vibrant as it is) also encompasses the larger tale of a supernatural curse afflicting all of the Americas, and, by extension, Oscar's family in Paterson, NJ. His comically macabre goth sister, his mythologically tyrannical mother, and a playboy friend with a soft heart for oafish teens all charm their way into your heart, before jerking its strings hard.
