Roxie Theater says…

It may sound funny to claim that film noir itself has a seedy underbelly, but I Wake Up Dreaming — the Roxie's glorious two-week celebration of b-grade noir, curated by former Roxie programmer Elliot Lavine — proves that for every Double Indemnity or Laura there were were at least five tawdrier tales of crime and desperation cranked out on the cheap by smaller studios. Of particular note among I Wake up Dreaming's embarassment of not-on-DVD riches are The Devil Thumbs a Ride, in which Lawrence Tierny plays the world's nastiest hitcher; Anthony Mann's rare crime drama Railroaded; Repeat Performance, the film-noir version of It's a Wonderful Life; and The Pretender, the very timely tale of a crooked financier, which also features one of the first scores for the theremin.
