Crammed with towering geometric constructions, rich pearled textures, evocative costumes, and fluorescent color juxtapositions bordering on the bellicose, Sarah Applebaum's sprawling new installation at Receiver Gallery offers access to a disorienting terrain bereft of "the waking world's" familiar spatial signposts. That said, it's a little misleading to cast the show as an alien biosphere. Viewers can find clear visual guidance in the form of strong visual allusions to '60s psychedelia, Op-Art, and an indebtedness to the Mission School's open relationship with DIY craft culture and bric-a-brac contortionists like Judy Pfaff, Caroliner, and Nick Cave.
