Even though burlesque has hit the mainstream, thanks to high-profile proponents such as Dita von Teese, it still has the power to provoke as well as titilate — as evinced by a London council's recent decision to brand a local show "adult entertainment." Dierdre Timmons' saucy and sweet documentary A Wink and a Smile, which makes its SF theatrical premiere this week, examines the draw and power that the slow reveal holds for ten "ordinary" women (taxidermist, student, journalist, and doctor are among their day jobs) who, with the aid of ostrich feathers and glittery pasties, transform themselves into otherwordly embodiments of glamour and seduction on stage.
