Science fair meets art studio at the country's largest festival devoted entirely to DIY culture: the fourth annual Maker Faire. This year's theme is Re-Make America (inspired by Obama's call to do just that), and spectacles include green machines, solar-powered devices, culinary creations, interactive exhibits, and the best in all-purpose geekery. Hundreds of exhibitors present eclectic wares and a host of how-to demonstrations, from 3D photography and hacking with micro-controllers to glass sculptures and recycled metal art.
