When genre-bending, nostalgia-inducing lords of surf-rock-meets-Cambodian-pop-music Dengue Fever arrive to perform an original score for silent classic The Lost World, something wonderfully strange and otherworldly is sure to emerge. The film itself is an underglazed collection of early cinematic triumphs and curiosities; the dinosaur adventure predated King Kong by eight years, and was the first movie to combine live action with stop-motion animation. The story — concerning a lusty journalist who joins forces with a mad scientist to unearth living dinosaurs in the late 19th century — dips into rather unsavory waters when dealing "anachronistically" with race, women's attitudes toward marriage, and ancient nerds; but viewed with kitschy hindsight and the aid of a kicking soundtrack, it should still make for great fun.
