Motorcycle Diaries screenwriter José Rivera spent a decade ruminating, fidgeting, and fixating on his new play between other projects, but couldn't squeeze out a single word for eight years. The resulting Boleros for the Disenchanted is a deeply personal excavation of his parents' marriage — first as a torrid love affair, then as the reluctantly cooled embers of this flame. The carefree romance ignites in a tiny Puerto Rican village in 1953, fueled by youthful naiveté and exuberance; when we check in 40 years later, the couple is hardened by unnervingly typical marital problems and desperately seeks to salvage a once-sure love. As desire, perseverance, and faith wage battle, Latin love songs blare, and we're left dizzy in the wake of life's myriad beauties and heartbreaks.
