Note:
Kenneth Josephson's black-and-white photographs of "pictures within pictures" laid the groundwork for conceptual photography, bringing into question our notions of illusion and reality. Reminiscent of René Magritte's work, which challenges ideas of the real and the represented, Josephson's photographs — primarily from the '60s and '70s — feature urban landscapes and portraits in which the hand of the artist is directly (and often literally) involved in the image. With Josephson's sense of visual humor, the work questions its own medium — photography as a visual document of the "real."
