Over the last few years, Canada has been a breeding ground for innovation, from the post-rock rambling of Godspeed You! Black Emperor to the indie anthemry of the Arcade Fire and Feist. Among the most recent leaders of the Canuck new wave are Constantines. Combining heavy riffs with sing-along choruses and a loud-quiet-loud jerkiness that could perk up the Pixies, this quintet has some of the rawest indie rock around. Openers (and Pitchfork darlings) Crystal Antlers take a free-form, orchestral approach, layering sizzling rockers with trippy, space-obsessed interludes.
