Revolution is in the air and on the screen at Frameline33. Closing night of the world's largest and oldest LGBT film festival coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, and many of this year's films focus on the underground legends, political upheavals, and spirit of possibility that defined the early years of Gay Liberation. Festival opener An Englishman in New York finds John Hurt giving a command performance as dandy Quentin Crisp in the '70s Big Apple; George and Mike Kuchar receive this year's Frameline Award, and are the subjects of an excellent documentary; and Born in '68 revisits the tumultuous Parisian student riots of May '68. There are plenty of contemporary narratives too, with standouts from established voices such as Monika Treut and John Greyson, and newer ones such as Pascal-Alex Vincent and Bohdan Sláma.
