Mannequins are the ultimate commodification of beauty: a plasticized ideal of body shape and expression crafted for the sole purpose of selling the latest fashion. And yet, not unlike a sad clown retrofitted with a painted-on smile, there’s a clear dissonance between the dummy model’s intention and its perception. In Beauty Challenged, Rebecca Martinez plays on this disconnect through a series of surprisingly personal (almost voyeuristic) photographs of mannequins dolled up with outrageous makeup, watering eyes, and flaking skin. Paradoxically, while effectively deconstructing our society’s silly notions of beauty and glamour, Martinez manages to endow her subjects with a flawed grace that is nothing short of human.
