The premise of Nick Laird's newest novel reads like a pitch for a new Woody Allen film: David Pinner, a thirty-something cynical academic, reignites his friendship with older American artist Ruth Marks, once David's professor and now an art star and serial divorcée. Things get hairy when David introduces Ruth to his younger, layabout flat-mate, and sparks fly between the two. Once David starts seeing green, Laird's ruthless comedy of manners really kicks into high gear. You have to wonder how much Laird (who is married to Zadie Smith) drew upon the personal experiences of being in a high-profile relationship to give his gentle poaching of London's art scene such a kick.
