Sundance Kabuki Cinema says…

The wry humor and the languid pace of Lake Tahoe make Jarmusch comparisons unavoidable, but director Fernando Eimbcke seems just as influenced by Kaurismäki and Ozu. However, as with a fine Chianti separating the rich blend into its varietals misses the point. Eimbck's mystical vision of a sluggish teenager dragging himself through an isolated town after an absurd auto accident (involving one car, one pole, and no one around for miles) must be experienced on its own terms. Succumbing to the picture's stasis is a rare experiential joy: as the lead ambles though tableaux-like frames filled with an odd assortment of characters seemingly plucked from a Bohumil Hrabal story – a punk teen mom, a fanatic Bruce Lee fan, an anthropomorphized dog – any cinematic precedents or real-life corollaries easily fade to black.
