Two years have passed since Magnolia Electric Co.'s last substantial release. For a prolific songwriter like Jason Molina, who began to build a following in the late-'90s as Songs: Ohia, that feels like a long time to wait. On July 21, the next installment of the band's melancholy roots rock finally arrived in records stores. One of Molina's finest to date, the new album, Josephine, is conceived as a song-cycle and built on a foundation of expressive but pared-down arrangements, often with piano or slide guitar leading the way. The sound has a rich weight to it in the end, providing a rousing vehicle for Molina's latest stories of wandering, longing, and lonesome ghosts.
