Allentown, Pennsylvania, might not be the first place you think of for groundbreaking heavy rock — in fact, excepting Billy Joel's downtrodden, early-'80s hit, you may have never heard of the city at all. After years of performing in such obscurity, Pissed Jeans have emerged from Pennsylvania's underground to inject a heavy dose of adrenaline into Sub Pop's recently pop-heavy roster. Equal parts chaotic noise and hard-rock bravado, Pissed Jeans come on slow while delivering pile-driver riffs that hearken back to the Jesus Lizard and the Amphetamine Reptile school of Midwest punk. The irony and sarcasm that fueled their buzz-generating album, Hope for Men, are also in full effect on the band's new release, King of Jeans.
