Hitting listeners full-force with their double-gauged beats, wailing strings, and sickly stuttering horns, Bay Area originals Shotgun Wedding Quintet are a force to behold. The sound they create is ludicrously oversized for five individuals, even when considering their penchant for electronically treating their woodwinds, brass and less expected elements such as turntables and freestyle rap. The multi-instrumental group hover somewhere between the already expansive labels of hip hop and jazz, yet manage to make those genres feel overly confining, as they tear through what sounds like the imaginary songbooks of everyone from Chuck D to Sun Ra.
