The elephant in the room in Medicine for Melancholy, Barry Jenkins' San Francisco-set romance between two young African American urbanites, was the city's deracination. San Francisco's African-American population is proportionally less than half that of 1970, and the number keep shrinking. Which is what makes a film like Take This Hammer, an early KQED-produced documentary, all the more remarkable. Followed by a roving camera crew, James Baldwin interviews local African American leaders and residents in what is now a portrait of a largely vanished community. Losing Just the Same, made two years later, focuses on the daily lives of youths growing up in an Oakland ghetto.
