On Country Club, John Doe's latest effort with Canadian alt-country stalwarts the Sadies, the former X singer/bass guitarist infuses a set of classic country sides with the same raw, emotional honesty that drove his earlier punk records. Having explored the commonalities of American roots and punk music as part of post-X project the Knitters and on 2007's much-lauded A Year in the Wilderness, Doe is an old hand at stripping themes of love, loss, and redemption to their barest essences, and is sure to make chestnuts such as "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and " I Still Miss Someone" sound fresh.
