Sports, like romance, have become somewhat of an over-determined cinematic subject. Beyond ESPN, a series of sports-themed films and docs curated by Joel Shepard and the Bay Guardian's Johnny Ray Huston, delivers refreshingly novel takes on familiar tropes such as the tireless underdog, the suspense of competition, the sweetness of victory, and the agony of defeat. Highlights include A Sunday on Hell, Jorgen Leth's documentary on the grueling 1976 Paris-Roubaix bike race; Beau Travail director Claire Denis' beautiful tribute to French choreographer Mathilde Monnier; Agua, Argentine director Veronica Cheng's sensual exploration of the loneliness associated with long-distance swimming; Visions of Eight, an omnibus take on the '72 Olympic Games in Munich; and Helmut Costard's multi-camera, match-length portrait of soccer star George Best, supposedly the inspiration for Douglas Gordon's acclaimed Zidane.
