Jennie Ottinger's art presents a floating world populated with refugees from Willem de Kooning and Francis Bacon canvases. Their skeletal frames eternally stuck between slow decomposition and full disintegration, Ottinger's small groups of ballerinas, doctors, and suited men bandy about on solid chunks of off-color tones, with trace elements of their former lives — tutus, top-hats, white frocks — displayed more as signifiers of a murky past than indicators of a present narrative. There is a certain melancholy to these characters we will never know, and yet, like a passing stranger who holds our gaze on the street, we can't help but look and catch something of ourselves in their ghostly presence.
