Famous for his serene and timeless photographs of oceans and movie palaces, Hiroshi Sugimoto explores a more volatile subject matter in his latest series: electricity. Sending a 400,000-volt, split-second spark across his film, Sugimoto captures and freezes the current's jagged path. The resulting images, both scientific and surreal, evoke primeval forests or sub-aquatic realms revealed in one brilliant flash of light. These visual experiments also capture some of the wonderment of photography's earliest days, and in keeping with this spirit, Sugimoto has also printed two never-before-seen images by 19th-century master William Henry Fox Talbot.
