LA-based Mel Kadel turns out pen-and-ink drawings that teem with creatures straight from a Sendak story. Flitting about, pushing, pulling, and climbing across the page in sinuous patterns, Kadel's little people work together, performing gymnastic stunts in which individual figures disappear into larger patterns. Armies of limbs and faces melt into multicolor swarms that from a distance look like wallpaper or a Japanese quilt. Kadel's palette and themes are earthbound; she works on coffee-stained paper in shades of gold, brown and umber and her figures wrestle exuberantly with Earth's gravitational pull, twisting, tugging, burrowing, and in many cases flying free.
