A few swabs of glorious color, a firm line or three, and voila, a magnificent bird or a wide-eyed deer appear before you. Such is the magic of illustrator Charley Harper's pictures of the natural world. Something of a essentialist, Harper shows little concern for realism, instead reveling in joyous simplicity. Comparing his work to that of 19th century master John James Audubon, Harper remarked, "Audubon counted every feather on each wing; I just count the wings." Thankfully, the results of such a minimal approach are anything but tame.
